TOBY WILKINSON
Character Artist
Game Developer
ABOUT ME
Hi there! My name is Toby. I am a multi-award winning third-year undergraduate student currently studying Computer Games Design at Staffordshire University, one of the current leading universities in the UK for game development.
During my studies, I have gained 5+ years of experience in the production of realistic and stylised 3D characters, creatures, environments, vehicles, and weapons for a range of video games, spanning across PC, mobile and console-based platforms.
I have experience in working on several projects in Junior, Senior and Lead roles, including the Stoke-on-TREND 2021 Game Jam winner Nightshift, Prepare to Dine, Lockbot 5, and my most recent and ambitious project yet, Project Sky, a brand new and innovative competitive hero shooter set in a sprawling fantasy world. More information on the project will be uploaded soon.
Working as a Junior Character Artist at Silverback Games, I have also gained valuable industry experience in advanced 3D modelling, sculpting, texturing, rigging, optimising, and presenting realistic 3D characters and creatures.
My main responsibilities involved bringing a range of believable and detailed characters to life that met the requirements of the project, though I was given the opportunity to develop a variety of shaders and materials, as well as to experiment with procedural texture generation techniques.
That is just a quick summary of who I am, but if you're looking for more information, you can find my CV here and a small row of my recent portfolio works below. Thank you for reading and I hope you have a pleasant day!

This diploma marked the beginning of my game development journey.
SKILLS & SOFTWARE EXPERIENCE
Photoshop
I use Photoshop mainly for artwork creation and image adjustment and refinement. For example, I use it to create, alter and improve texture maps and render shots, but I can also use it to develop pixel, concept and hand-painted texture artworks, as well as UI designs.
ZBrush
I use ZBrush to sculpt all of my character models, as well as to add finer details such as ornamental, fabric and skin detailing. I also use ZBrush to poly paint my stylised models.
Maya
I use Maya mainly to utilise Xgen to add hair to my characters, though I do occasionally use Maya to model, rig and render objects too.
3DS Max
I use 3DS Max as my main modelling software. I use it model, rig and unwrap objects, as well as to render shots.
Unreal Engine
I use Unreal Engine for a wide variety of technical developments, including level design, gameplay mechanic design, UI design and implementation, AI scripting, particle VFX creation, shader and material development, renders, animation, and architectural visualisation.
Substance Suite
I use the Substance Suite for a variety of texture-related activities. For example, I use Painter as the primary software to texture my models, Designer to build textures from scratch, and Sampler to generate textures from image inputs.
Quixel Suite
Although I tend to use Substance over Quixel, I understand how to use it. I occasionally use Quixel to create textures for my models.
Marvelous Designer
I use Marvelous Designer to construct garments for my characters, including hats, hoodies, jackets, tops, skirts, dresses, corsets, trousers, ties, and scarves, to name some examples.
Jira
I mainly use Jira for task and bug documentation and tracking, as well as to neatly organise and assign tasks to any existing team members.
